The living room could be considered the heart of the household. It's where families meet to watch television, hang out, talk, and relax. For all of those reasons, proper illumination is essential. Living room lighting is a necessity for doing things like watching television, entertaining, reading and doing chores. You can accent and emphasize key pieces of furniture, art, or architecture with pendants and track lighting. Dimmers are great for this room because they quickly and easily change to suit the mood or atmosphere you want to create.

Television sets, video game consoles, and computers require low-level fixtures that won't wash out a screen or create a glare. Small track lights can be installed under shelves to accent objects, and provide the flexibility needed to adapt to any decor or trend you want to keep in the room. Fluorescent bulbs provide a nice even illumination throughout the room, and are cost effective.

Lights with flexible arms are a must if you are a reader. A floor lamp is a good solution for this as you can put an alarm clock on the added table, or put your book and reading glasses on it when you are done reading. If you have a game table in your living room, consider hanging pendants over it to help accent it, and provide a nice even illumination throughout the table while providing a chic or contemporary style with a low cost. You could also install two recessed lights over each side of the table, if you prefer that look.

Bar areas can also be lit with smaller pendants or recessed fixtures. Plants and artwork can be highlighted with halogen picture lights, and spot lamps are great at accenting greenery. Of course a window is necessary for plants as well if you want to keep them alive.
