General Lighting
Before you get started, there are three basic types of lighting you should know about. General lighting is the lighting that provides light for entire rooms in a home. A number of fixtures provide this light: chandeliers, track light or recessed light, and ceiling- or wall-mounted fixtures. Task lighting is used to illuminate specific tasks, like reading, sewing, working at a computer, or cooking. Recessed and track lighting work for this type of lighting, as do portable lamps. Finally, accent lighting is where the drama comes in. It is used to spotlight specific items, such as works of art, and changes the look and feel of a room. It can also highlight texture and can be used in outdoor spaces to change the look of landscaping. Track, recessed, or wall-mounted fixtures most often provide this type of light. Lighting comes in many shapes and styles. We'll introduce you to just a few. Chandeliers bring sparkle and style to a room, while a more casual pendant-style light can add style to a den or game room. Ceiling fixtures are perfect for general lighting in hallways or entryways. Portable lamps are great for any space where you want to move light around or add a touch of style to a room's decor with a decorative piece. |
