There are a number of options when it comes to lighting your foyer. Because it's the entryway into your home, you need lighting that is both welcoming to your guests and adequate enough to guarantee safe passage into your home, especially if there are stairs. A nice-looking light fixture or chandelier will provide adequate lighting in a general space like the foyer. Make sure the fixture spreads a wide swath of light. If you like a fixture that doesn't provide quite enough light, consider installing a set of wall sconces on either side of a foyer mirror. |
If your entryway leads into a hallway, your lighting scheme can continue from one space to another by using track lighting, matching wall sconces or ceiling fixtures, or recessed fixtures. Continuing the lighting scheme from one area to another creates continuity of design and also makes sure that all the areas are properly lit. Moveable track fixtures are an excellent choice as they allow the homeowner to redirect light in both general areas and toward areas the homeowner would like to accent, such as a work of art or an antique.
If your foyer leads directly into a stairwell, again, lighting is key. Stairs need to be lit from top to bottom with switches at both ends, and again, using matching fixtures from the foyer into the stairwell is a nice way to continue your decor scheme throughout your home.
