Pendant Overview

Decorating your home with stylish and practical pendant lights

Pendants have a lot to offer the creative home decorator. Though most often associated hanging above kitchen islands, these can be used virtually anywhere within a house - or outside of it - for task illumination, accenting, or ambiance. These are a great as an out-of-the-ordinary way to supplement or even replace your existing fixtures with a feature that is both uncommonly stylish and eminently practical.

A pendant light catches the eye in a way that recessed or standard ceiling fixtures simply can't match. Yet these seldom take center stage; they're the character actors of a home's scheme. These fixtures are usually placed in rooms that require supplemental fixtures of some kind, whether it's for performing a specific task or just creating a dramatic effect by enriching a room's color or artistically delineating its space.

Kitchens are a standard example of how you can use these rejuvenate a room's look by performing a useful function in a stylish way - such as a gorgeous Victorian style that brightens a kitchen island. Pendants can also be used to illuminate dining room tables, game or reading areas, home bars, aquariums, or display cabinets.

The creation of a particular mood is something at which pendant lights excel. Downlights can foster an atmosphere of quietness and seclusion in a den or study. An inverted fixture with a dimmer would provide glare-free ambiance in a bedroom or living room. Outdoor pendants are perfect for porches and patios, creating the kind of warm atmosphere that one associates with summer nights spent in a glider or comfy adirondack chair.

Practical Uses for the Home

In general, a pendant should be hung about 30 inches above the surface you wish to illuminate, though a range of 30 to 40 inches is typical. If you're illuminating a dining room table, the diameter of the dining room fixture should be about 6 to 12 inches less than the width of the table. You should also make sure that the wattage is high enough to properly accent the area. A range of 200 to 400 (or possibly more) watts should be sufficient for most dining areas. If you have a shorter ceiling - about 8 feet or lower - you should probably avoid hanging these with shades that are more than 2 feet wide.
