Outdoor Lighting Tips

Murray Feiss Chameleon Outdoor Wall Sconce - 15

Making the outside of your home safe and attractive is easy if you know how to use lighting design. A well-lit front entrance to your home is a nice way to greet visitors. Wall lanterns on the sides of the door are an excellent way to do this, and your front door will become immediately welcoming. Another way to light your front door is by using a recessed light or a pendant lamp, hanging from a chain or suspended close to the ceiling.

A garage light is a good idea for safety and security reasons. A wall fixture installed on the face of the garage does a good job. Consider a high-pressure sodium bulb in these fixtures because it lasts many times longer and gives off a stronger beam of light. Also, consider installing a fixture that turns off in the day and on in the evening to save energy but still provide security.

Stairs and pathways should be lit for safe passageway after dark. Path or post lanterns work well, or if the path is near your home, you can attach lights to the side of the house. Path lanterns spread circular patterns on the outdoor walkway and can also be used for showcasing nearby landscaping. These also work well for illuminating your driveway.

Decks, porches, and patios are great places to consider using some designs outdoors. Low-voltage fixtures can be installed under stairs, railings, or benches. Installing a spotlight in a nearby tree is an unusual technique and also can illuminate certain things, such as a table or a grill.
