Dining room lighting needs to be both attractive and useful. A mix of all three types; general, accent, and task - should be used in the dining room. These types will equip your dining room for many different gatherings: a formal dinner party, a casual family gathering, or other activities usually done at a dining room table, such as bookkeeping or homework. A chandelier, the focal point of your dining room scheme, will provide more than ample general illumination to showcase your furnishing choices and also make eating a pleasure. Installing a dimmer in the dining room is a good idea - when the chandelier is turned up or down, the atmosphere can change dramatically, depending on the setting. |
Recessed or track lighting will look great, and will also provide everything you need to highlight different areas around a room. A ring of recessed lights around a room will provide at least as much illumination as a chandelier would, and pure white or low-voltage fixtures with halogen bulbs can add some extra sparkle to the room, literally, making crystal and silver shine on your table.
Accenting areas in the dining room can be done in many ways. If sconces are your style, consider installing a pair on each side of an antique sideboard. Choose fixtures that complement the rest of the style in your dining room. Bring attention to a family portrait or a special piece of art and watch the complements roll in. A china cabinet becomes a conversation piece after installing a strip of low-voltage spot lamps under the shelves.
