Shadow-free bathrooms are a must for delicate activities like shaving and applying makeup. When it comes to lighting, there are plenty of choices, and size or square footage will help you determine what fixtures will make it shine best. If your bathroom has a small mirror and counter, consider bracketed lights on the side of the mirror, which will illuminate the entire room and your face evenly. A bracket at the top of the mirror serves the same purpose but provides a different look. Certain types of bulbs work the best for the bathroom. Incandescent bulbs behind a glass or plastic fixture provide the most natural look and feeling. If you are concerned with energy efficiency, make sure the fluorescents you choose have a warm white tone. |
If you want a touch of drama in your powder room, consider installing old Hollywood theatrical lighting strips with round bulbs: You'll feel like you're putting on your makeup in a Broadway dressing room and enjoy the same quality of as other, less-flashy design styles.
If you're fortunate enough to have a large bathroom, consider additional fixtures to light your tub, shower, or other bathroom enclosures. A recessed ceiling light are probably the best way to illuminate any of these areas, and would also work well for a sauna or a whirlpool bath. A few recessed bulbs will allow lighting to be turned on and off in different areas for variety.
